Our Approach

A foundry is never a solo craft. Neither is architecture. The best of it is cast from talent, experience, and the relationships around it.

Our belief

Studio Foundry stays hands-on across every stage of a project. What follows is the path we take together. Each stage builds on the one before it, moving from the raw material of a brief and a site through to a resolved, finished space that's ready to be lived in. The steps are clear, but the pace and depth flex to suit your project.

The Process

[ 01 ]
Discovery
Every project starts with listening. We spend time understanding how you want to live or work, what you value, and how you will use the space day to day. We get to know the site just as closely, including its orientation and light, its constraints, its history, and the way it sits within its surroundings. We talk through budget and timeline openly at this stage, so the ambition and the reality stay aligned from the first conversation. This is where we gather the raw material of the project.
[ 02 ]
Concept
With the brief and the site understood, we shape the core idea. This is the most exploratory stage, built from sketches, references, rough massing, and material moods that test how the space could feel and how it responds to place and purpose. We present one clear direction and refine it with you until the concept feels right. A foundation that is honest and specific makes every later decision easier.
[ 03 ]
Schematic Design
The concept becomes concrete. We resolve the plan, the form, and the spatial relationships, including how rooms connect, how you move through them, and where light falls, and we set the overarching material direction at the same time. You see drawings and, where it helps, models or visuals that make the design easy to read. By the end of this stage the architecture of the project is settled in principle and ready to be detailed.
[ 04 ]
Design Development
Here every decision is refined and detailed. We resolve materials, finishes, joinery, fixtures, and the moments where they meet, and this is where the tactility and craft of the work are decided. We coordinate with the engineers and consultants the project needs, so the design holds together technically as well as visually. Detail follows from the material itself, and each choice is made with care.
[ 05 ]
Documentation & Planning
We prepare the drawings and specifications that let the project be priced, approved, and built accurately. This includes lodging for the planning and building approvals your project requires and managing that process on your behalf. Thorough documentation at this stage protects the design and your budget once construction begins, and it keeps the build predictable on site.
[ 06 ]
Construction & Contract Administration
We stay hands-on through the build. Working alongside the builder, we answer queries, review progress, and make sure what is constructed stays true to what was designed, including the intent, the details, and the quality of finish. As your advocate on site, we help keep the project on program and on budget, resolving questions as they arise.
[ 07 ]
Completion
This is the finished work, made to be lived in. We see the project through its final details and the handing over of keys, making sure the space is resolved and ready. Our interest continues well beyond completion, because the best measure of the work is how it holds up and improves with use over many years.
