A boutique alpine lodge above the Shotover gorge at Arthurs Point, cut into the schist so guests arrive to the landscape rather than to the building.
about the project
The site fell steeply to the river, dramatic and exposed. We terraced the lodge into the slope with a heavy schist base, then set glazed guest pavilions above to capture the gorge and the mountains in a single sweep.
about the project
Six suites step down the contour for privacy, sharing a central lounge and fire. Local stone, blackened steel and oak — with deep overhangs and thermal mass — keep the lodge calm through the alpine swing between seasons.
